Fiat X1/9 1982 restoration/race build

Wow!

What does your car weigh? Just guessing around 2100 pounds (950kg), then you have to be making 235 to 240 horsepower AT THE REAR WHEELS to run those numbers... that is really amazing.

Hi,

I dont know the exact weigth, but i guess it is around 950kg. I need to measure it,to estimate the power. With this ET i would say it is somewhere in the 260-270 hp area at the crank,so i agree with your estimation.

I will do a dyno also if the boost will be raised, but with this stock head gasket it is not possible. I had once a HG failure,so either i need to get an MLS somewhere (found for 14 bolt engine but not for 10 bolt) or do the wire ring mod.

Hi Guys,

in the last weeks we had our final races here. The Little X1/9 won the Hungarian national championship and also an another 6 race (westdragrace)championship. As we came to the season end, some weird electrical issues came up,but on sunday i was lucky and could win.

Best time this time was 12.4*181.36. New speed record for myself, new time record for the westdragrace series. Low traction all day long,i could get it only down to 2.0 60 feet time instead of the 1.7.

Well, the MR2 was 2.0 N/A if i recognize it well,it was during the qualification, only the time is important,no pairing within same class.

Great performance!

When you started I never thought your car would end up this successful. Great work!

What makes the X successful in drag racing?
Low weight and great traction?

I think it has a winning combination: RWD+mid engine.

Traction is great compared to FWD cars,if the track is ok. I could do 0.4s better 60 feet times also on fully wet tarmac in rain.

Power is also not low,I estimate it somewhere above 250 at the crank.
Weight is somewhere around 1000kg with driver, fuel, etc, i will measure it to have better estimations.

Now,the season is over,I have some ideas for the winter time to make it a bit faster. Next year it would be nice to reach mid 11' times.

Boost is low, only 1.2-1.3 bar,so plenty of power is sleeping in the beast. Only thing to solve here is the head gasket. I think this stock cheap HG hold up really nice, but i need 100% reliability.

An LSD would be also useful to avoid this "rocket car" effect it did in one of the vids.:eyepop:

Hi,

i was false on last reply,we had one more race on this weekend on 10.06. It was only 201m on the hungarian F1 track (Hungaroring),traction was not good also.I left my Toyo R888 at home and used my street tires, still got 1.9 60 feet on the Kumho's (195/50 R15). Still impressive. Unfortunately I could not get in the 7's this time, the final run was the best for me on this race: 8.013*143.89. Still sub 5s 0-100 huh?

Lets see the video:

On the way home,i noticed the water temp went over 90 degree,so stopped the car. Water was coming out of the expansion tank. Waited a bit, filled up with water and went home (arond 140km). Water temp was ok when engine revved over 2500 rpm,and went up to 93 when stopped at the traffic light. I was aware, that the stock head gasket wont last forever. 1st did 2 races, not this one lasted on the whole season (8 races, 4000km). It is time to source some Nava linea wire ring gaskets. Did someone of you use this?

Are you talking about a gasket with fire rings that dig into the aluminium of the head?

I do know someone who uses one in his X.

Ulix,

exactly this is what i am talking about. Separate fire rings, wich are hold in position with the gasket (no machining on the block),and dig into the alu head like a knife.

These are not cheap, and the italian guys aren't "too communicative" where i contacted them. It would be nice to have MLS instead of fire rings, but it is not available for the 10 bolt engine,at least i did not found one.

There is a local possibility to mill ring groove into the engine block and use copper fire rings, wich does not hurt the head (not too much).

So now the head is removed. I had to look cloose on the gasket to find a single spot, where it failed. Some material glued on the engine ,so first i tought it is the cause for the missing part between cyl 2-3.

This gasket lasted for 9 races and driving around 3000km on the street.
Not that bad for a 15€ OEM gasket (Elring).

Now I seriously need a different solution. I got finally a quote from Italy (with the help of an italian X owner) for the separate ring gasket.

Radics, You have definitely earned your bragging rights. Good looking and fast. I am talking about the car. I am so glad I took the time to go through this thread from the beginning. What years are the transmissions you used? I was asking about tranny swaps and your setup looks like it might be what I am looking for. Once again I have to say congratulations on a fine build.

Hi Dragonsgate,

thank you!

The tranny is a hibrid of a G60 (Golf 2 G60 1990) and TDI unit (Golf 3 110 TDI 1995). In general,a G60 would be ok,I just wanted some longer 1-2-3 gear, thats the reason for the TDI parts.

This swap requires huge fabrication, adapter plate should be designed and milled to mount in on the engine. Custom clutch is also needed, because of the different spline on the gearbox main shaft. I used Punto GT flywheel and pressure plate with a sintered clutch disk made for the Golf 2 GTI 16v.

The hardest part was to make the gear linkage cable working. I had to turn around the linkage in the mechanism at the gear knob and also modify the gear selector mechanism at the trans. I had to adjust it very fine,at first few tries, there was either no 1st-2nd gear,or no 5th.

Hi Guys,

my separate ring gasket is finally arrived! Now there is no reason why not turn up the boost to 2 bar! :eyepop:

I ordered it directly from the manucacturer in Italy, navalineasport.it

The P/N is 80111. They have a catalog, unfortunately only in italian.

This separate ring gaskets are called guarnizione con anelli separati.
