As for 16 inchers specifically... well I THINK I saw one once in a Central American country... but IMHO and that of most others, 16's are going about an inch too far.
Even a "Hot Wheels" car can have tires and wheels that are too big for the body... there is indeed too much of a BIG thing at times.
I suggest you look into the numbers relative to overall tire diameter, backspacing and offset relative to the wheels and the wheel wells you plan to put them into or stick them out of.
Bottom line for ME is a 15 inch wheel that is 8 inches in width for the rear, 7 in the front, the backspacing and offset to clear the calipers and not rub the struts, and usually a 215/45 up front and something even bigger like a 245/45 in the rear.
