After filling the car I noticed a puddle on the ground and a stream of gas comming out underneath. I had good clothes on so I didn't crawl underneath I'll save that for tonight.
It wasn't leaking when I got to work so I was wondering is there a breather tube or something on the filler neck that may have come off? Any suggestions welcome. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Stu,

How much fuel was spilled? How long did it continue? It is even remotely *possible* that you may have overfilled the tank? If you topped it off to the top of the filler neck, fuel could have spilled over into the little compartment beneath (above rear fender-well) where there is a rainwater drain tube. The gas would then be purged down that tube and onto the ground. Is that possible at all? That would be the simplest explanation.

If you know you did not spill any yourself into that compartment, then it is possible that the short rubber hose that connects the filler neck to the tank is leaking, or that the hose clamps on it may be loose.

If the clamps are loose or that hose is leaking, the gas would have its own route to leak into that same compartment and go down the drain tube onto the ground.

If this is the case, for the short term you could just not fill it up into the filler neck because if this is the problem, it will only leak until fuel level drops below that point. Unless of course the hose itself is totally destroyed, then there would be massive spillage when you tried to fill up at all! I'd check those clamps and hose and see if that's the deal. Otherwise then we can dig deeper. Good Luck! -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Just finished repairing this exact problem on my X. the larger rubber hose that connects the filler neck to the top of the tank has probably developed a split. Not too difficult to replace (~1 hr) but finding the hose can be a bit of a pain. It's a large dia. formed hose. I actually had a longer piece from my 124 fuel tank that I cut a section out of so the shape matched. Now I can fill up with no leaks!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It is the fuel hose. Fuel is a solvent and over time it eats the hose. I know this as all the X's I've owned have been saved from the wrecking yard. The only long term solution is to replace the hose. A suggestion from a mechanic friend, is go to a radiator shop and tell them your problem they will be the only ones that may have a fuel line that large. Remember any hose other than a fuel hose will be destroyed by fuel, including coolent hoses. so don't use those. I fixed mine by removing the hose and sealing the damaged areas with solvent resistant silicon, however this is a quick fix and will only last untill destroyed by time.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I haven't had a chance to look at the hose yet. The short term fix I have been using is to use a piece of marine fuel line hose. When I am filling I put the marine hose inside the filler tube and pump the gas in the marine hose. This seems to get the gas past the leaky spot. Kludgy but it may do me until I put the car away for the winter and have time to work on it without needing to drive it every day. Thanks for the help.
