Do not start using synthetic oil in a older car

it will leak. I found this out the hard way many years ago.

Well Niles... Talk about opening a can o' worms...

I mean, OIL!

Preferences for oil, as well as spark plugs are like belly-buttons, everyone has a couple...

I'll give you mine... I own a '79 with 173,000 miles of abuse on the same engine that came from the factory and has never been overhauled.

I use Castrol 10-40 GTX detergent/semi synthetic. Here's a link:

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectionbodycopy.do?categoryId=9014101&contentId=7073084

It is also REASONABLY priced...

Now... Prepare yourself for hundreds of other "opinions"... Good luck with making a decision! HA!

I've run:
Castrol GTX 20w-50 for the last few years, now:
Shell Rotella 15w-40 Diesel (has more zddp whatever) (Walmart, $13/gallon)

vintage racer and Italian car guru (He trained all the factory Bertone trained mechanics in the US in 1983), Peter Krause told me to always use Castrol GTX 20W-50 in x-1/9's.

Few oils have high zinc content any more. RotillaT was one of the last but it has changed also. The first 2 links offer high zinc content retro oils I have used for flat tappet cams. The third I believe does also but havent used any but have been to a semenar by Brad about his oil.
