Fuel Sender, a possible option...

It certainly wouldn't be a bolt in, but I think modifying the old access panel or fabricating another could make this a viable option.

Hopefully one of the "smarties" here could chime in with the actual resistance ranges currently used...

they used that style of a float/tube in Peugeots for years. even then they had there own set of gremlins. They were very accurate, but with age they were less to be trusted than the float/arm that we have all come to know and hate. a good series of speed bumps and/or railroad tracks, the float has been known to kick sideways and stick in the tube and the level will never change. on the arm/float setup, especially if you like to run at half a tank, the windings take the brunt of the storm where it used most and you won't have an accurate reading until your above or below where the winding is to far away from the copper tab that tells the gauge what is really in your tank.
I really think we all start using DIPSTICKS to check the fuel tank to see what we have left in the tank.... damn !!we spend so much under the hood anyway........what's one more thing:excited:
