Fiat/Mazda News

The Miata/MX-5 engine will most probably be one of their Skyactive engines. The Fiata is likely a Muti air given Sergio Marchionne's moves to make Alfa Romeo a totally separate company within Fiat so probably won't see the 1750 engine from the 4C Spyder. To transfer this contract with Mazda to a Fiat badge is looking very good and the Alfa looks to retain sole deployment of its engine. Sergio has been looking at using the same structure as Maserati and Ferrari for Alfa Romeo and is reported he will spin it off so it will live or die by its own hand. That Alfa hasn't made a profit in the years that Sergio has been at the helm could be interpreted as him following through on ensuring Alfa becomes a credible business proposition. If it doesn't then he has a stronger case to tell the board to kill it.

He has been pushing the 'made in Italy" culture and insisting that Alfa Romeo, like Ferrari / Maserati, are Italian products that 'belong' to Italy is a marketing concept I am not too sure transfers to the Global consumer. Perhaps this is a lot more to do with better access to corporation tax group relief if it is a separate legal entity. In any event all this is an interesting ( promising ? ) sign for a "Fiata' roadster.

These guys say the new Miata/MX-5 will not be a Turbo ( in line with Japans go cart concept for the Miata/MX-5 ) so likely a 2.0 litre NA Syyactive from the Mazda 3., so likely the 6 cog manual then. I haven't had a chance to perouse the exibits from the Paris Motor show but the wraps were supposed to come off when it was shown in France. But that is still just a show car, I still haven't seen final specs from Japan.

Fiata files in US Patent Office

Fiat’s future product plans for North America are likely to include something called a 124 in both closed cabin and convertible variants.

The company filed trademark applications for both names with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on December 12 for “automobiles and their structural parts and motors and engines.” Fiat is expected to release a sports car that will share its platform with the upcoming ND Mazda MX-5 that up until now has been referred to in media reports as the Fiat Roadster.

Previously the co-development program for the new Mazda MX-5 was expected to birth a new sports car from Alfa Romeo. Fiat’s filings with the USPTO suggest that it plans to offer its version of the new sports car in both coupe and convertible body styles.

From the mid-1960’s to the mid-1980’s Fiat sold a 2+2 sports car under the 124 Sport Spider nameplate with a body designed by Pininfarina. From the mid-60s to the mid-70s, Fiat also sold a mid-size sedan called the 124.
