Dropped the old girl off at the mechanic this a.m.

Sounds great

Glad to hear the heat shielding is working. I bought one of these

Cobra 99-0155P Universal Heat Shield 1.75in. x 7in

Now I have to find the time to install.

Hey docpan -- that looks like a good solution!
If you have an IR thermometer it's worth some time probing your engine compartment around the header. In my case the water pump and pipe were getting hammered by close proximity to a 500+ degree header tubes. Without the water pump pipe modification there's little clearance (<1/4"?) between the header and pipe so you have limited options there, but a combination of reflective barrier (shield) and insulation behind it is probably best. It seems to be working well for me.

I drove quite a bit this weekend and thus far the system is running VERY cool and I'm getting little or no air in the system. I still need more time and miles, and the outdoor temp was cooler these past few days as well so hoping to test more when we get near 90 in ~2 days. I know the shielding has improved things dramatically and will hopefully know in a week or so if it resolved them completely.
