I see three pieces of plastic, one of which is the old very obviously defunct reservoir.

Looks like a busted tank, a new piece of plastic, and a buttload of RTV that was sandwiched between.

It is very much to your credit that you do not see how to combine those three pieces of plastic in a way that will create a zombie-like living-dead imitation of a non-defunct reservoir... But I can imagine it, and what has been imagined cannot be unimagined.

That's exactly it. Looks like the top caved in at some point and he cut a piece of plastic for a new top.
