I'm totally sold on clay!

True Classic
Hi all,

It's been a while since I've posted. I've been so busy, have traveled for work six times since the start of May, and have had a huge workload locally whenever I've been in town. Reading the forum has kept me sane for the last couple of months...thanks everyone!

This was the first weekend without responsibilities related to work, so I decided to make it a weekend of detailing the cars. Not just a wash/wax, armor all and tire dressing. Nope, it was the full Monty...wash,clay bar, polish, wax, vacuum and shampoo carpets, leatherique the seats and door cards, armor all inside and out, glass cleaned and rain-x, and engine detail. Oh, and of course an oil change and tire dressing. A full day for each car (~12hrs each). A steady stream of tunes and several food items that are bad for me. It was an awesome weekend. But the thing that surprised me the most was the impact of the clay bar on the final product. The finish of each car is unbelievable! Not just like glass, but like a mirror. I could see my razor stubble in my reflection. I've never tried a clay bar before, thinking it to be voodoo. But I'm absolutely sold on its positive impact. If you talke your time, you end up with a surface that has not a single blemish. I doubt the finish was this nice even when it was brand new. And once done the first time, I bet subsequent times will be even easier. Maybe will add 30-60 minutes to a detail, but in my mind is totally worth it. Only caveat...if you clay your car, leave enough time for at least one coat of high quality wax (2 is even better). Anyway, I just wanted to share how nice it was spending these two days with the cars, getting them decked out for a summer of driving in the mountains.

Cheers to all.
Mike

Look in your driveway....

is that a line of Xs I see forming??

Comment #1 - Do we make a reservation or just get our shine in the order of arrival. ;)

Comment #2 - Big talk, but no pictures Mike.

I'll have to figure out how to post pics

I usually use my iPad to read the forum, and haven't tried to upload pics before. I'll see what I can do. And anyone who brings their car to SLC, I'd be delighted to detail it with them.

I use an iPad for maybe 95% of everything I do online, including everything around here. Xweb uses external picture hosting services, like photobucket or others, to display your pictures. Very easy to do. Find a service, register, upload your pictures, imbed the picture link here on Xweb. Done.

+1 with Jiminy D... I wanna see BEFORE & AFTER...

and I am NOT from Missouri...

HA!

Welcome back... it has been awhile. I imagine if you did not have any time to say HI on Xweb, you probably have showered for 6 months either...

The best way to post pix is to upload to a photo host. I pay for Smug Mug but you can get free ones. I used to use flicker. Then you can get an embeddable forum link, and paste it into the message.

A few more pics

Looks like I haven't mastered photobucket yet

But if you click on the picture it takes you to an album with more pics.

Now totally sold on photobucket too

Thanks guys. Being able to share pics has changed my world, even if they can't do justice to the cars since I'm a poor photographer. Enjoy what you can of these.

You can see my reflection in the first pic. By looking at my face indirectly like this, you won't turn to stone. The second pic shows friends side by side. Louis is in the off site storage unit. Sorry. Cheers everyone!

Armor All isn't very good for anything more than looking shiny for a few days and attracting dust. Read up a little bit on the webs--there's a healthy debate about it. Some love it, some hate it, and chemists generally don't like it. It was verboten at the car shop I worked at years ago. 303 Aerospace Protectant is the good stuff that no one doubts. Well... if you got's the bucks...

I prefer to use this product not just on tires... but everything! Comes in "arthritic" Spray Cans or Pump Bottles and lasts for WEEKS on tires and MONTHS on interior surfaces... and... its $6 or $7 bucks!

Don't overdue the claying....

It takes off some of the finish while it takes out the dirt and dust that's settled into the paint. Maybe once every year or two.... It is probably noted somewhere in the instructions.
