Who are the regular racers here?

True Classic
Spring brings us well into the new racing season here in the northern hemisphere. Besides resident soon-to-be a F1 driver Matt B. who else here races their X (or other vehicle), regularly or otherwise? Autocross, road racing, time trials, etc.

I fell in love with Autocross last season! Can't wait for my '82 X to be overhauled. MWB head and cam,new Allison quad exhaust, adjustable cam pulley, Prima front brakes, bigger diameter piston rear brakes from Henk, lightened flywheel, and comp. type clutch. As I compete with Miatas with a lot more horsepower, maybe I can get closer to being competitive with them!

I do iRacing. No X1/9s though. :)

I have a SpecMiata that I haven't driven in a couple of years sadly.

AutoSlalom in Quebec

Hi,

I started autoslalom (solo 2) 25 years ago. Did some duty as club president, regional director, rep on the canadian comitee and sanctioning body vice-prez, then president. Some years, I raced my X, other years, I took my other car while the Fiat was in rebuild. Last ten years, I bought myself another stock X19 to practice while I finish rebuilding my HCR (previously GP) X, and did a few solo just to keep practicing. My race car is near completion, so I can't wait to get it around the cones. Usually the first event of the season in Québec is in the end of May. But I still have a lot of work to do.

I had the chance to do a solo 2 race against "MNCS" Steve Hoelscher, Scott Phelps, Mark Seelbinder, Geoff Craig, Courtney Water, Jonathan Ranney and Ulix in a special meet we organized in Vermont in 1999 to get a "rematch" after the FFO. Half these people are still driving x 1/9. The spirit is still the same here in this forum..

Yay

When I finally get back to s Cal I'll auto x again. Certainly not a regular racer currently but there are always auto x s in so cal. I know Laguna seca has a track day 5/17 but that's a bit north of you.

24 Hours of LeMons....

Has become the only non-professional race series that interest me on any level.

Involvement began about 2008 about a year or two after LeMons racing began. When the LeMons folks discovered an x1/9 was going to be in their race. The reputation of Fix It Again Tony was expected.. only to to have them proven so very wrong. The block drain worked loose dumping most all of the coolant, cooking the engine causing a Blow-Pro (Fel-Pro) head gasket failure. A stock Fiat head gasket was installed (that is Diane and me wrenching in 30 ish degree cold), finished the race.
260 laps with Thumder Hill lap times similar to stock BMW E30, the LeMons folks were absolutely impressed.

Evolution of this version of the LeMons exxe included four motorcycle carbs and other go faster goodies.... good enough to remain ahead of a race prepped Porsche 928. Another example of what is possible with a mostly stock drive train and suspension-chassis.

Eventually the Lampredi SOHC engine and Fiat transaxle was replaced with a Mazda 12A PP rotary and Porsche 901 transaxle (problem child). This was significant development process resulting in one of the fastest cars in LeMons.

Current performance level of the Rotary powered exxe is about equal to the well known Eye Sore Racing Turbo Miata. Both have about 200 Whp, the exxe is lower weight, more agile, both have similar grip limits. This turbo Miata engine was created by two engineers who's day job is at Garrett Air Research (not a weekend wrencher hack job, these folks know precisely what they are doing), the turbo folks and chassis by Dave Coleman Mazda US's chassis engineer. Dave and me often spend a lot of time yaking about suspension design set ups and more during LeMons races. There is commiseration of solving race car problems with the Eye Sore Racing folks.

There is a LOT more than just increasing power to achieve this level of road course performance. Track speeds and lap times for LeMons cars are limit by tires which must be DOT 180 or more. Durability and reliability is a must as these cars are run hour after hour after hour under race conditions. Very different requirements than club race events, time trials or solo events.

What makes LeMons racing so very appealing to me, it is much about having a FUN time a racing, much less about winning. There is great freedom for technical innovation and tinkering. This just does not happen in SCCA or similar race sanctioned events.

For those curious, many of the LeMons race adventures are archived on Xweb.

Oh, All those years, I have NEVER driven the LeMons racer, just designed, built, set-up and tweaked the car.

I also do some racing...

So, I use to be into Autocross really heavily. Then I moved into Hillclimbs, and then into events like LuckyDog racing and Lemons.

Each of them have their own flair and fun/danger levels.

I have run a variety of cars over the years, from hot rod 128's, to X 1/9's, to rotary powered X 1/9's.

However, with a recent move and looking to get into a hobby in which my whole family can participate, I have put the car racing on hold for a little while.

Racer on hiatus

I have an SCCA production-class X1/9 that I raced in the early 2000's. I went to the SCCA national Runoffs three times, finishing as high as 5th in 2004. I put the car away in 2006 to get my kids through college, and I'm still working on a budget to return to racing.

Same story with me Paul

Started racing SCCA ITC, then production class in the late 90's, then moved to COMMA's GT3 class. Last time I was out was in 2008 I think. I will un-mothball the car someday, although with a more competitive engine.

-The circus show (racing) must go on...

Yea, what she said.

Except the going fast part. I compete more for the "style points".

There's a new group of X19 race enthusiasts cropping up
in the Houston area as well but they aren't regulars here.

Larry Svaton - GTL + H-Prod Cars
David Louw - H-Prod
Aldora Louw - H-Prod
Randy Smart - H-Prod

That is certainly stylish in a the sense that Milan is the epicenter of style.

I'm a bit more unrefined:

Did you all ever sell that thing? I sure wish you all had fielded it more than just the one time.

I run #3 with ProAutoSports in Phx

I run a '76 X with a 1500 / 4-speed in a local club called ProAutoSports around the Phoenix area. We do visit about six different tracks around the area and try to run about once a month Labor Day - Memorial Day (we take the summer off).

I run a small-bore production sport class but we are further classed by power-to-weight so you can literally run anything and do just about anything to your race car.

Too much fun!

Help Me Obie One!

You know X`s very knowledgably, how well can you navigate this sight? I am new, sorta, and having need of additional help understanding how to post and communicate with other members. I am an old guy and take a little longer, or I am stupideder than most.

Yes, that was me

You can actually still find the abandoned web site if you look hard enough. I guess it is time to do some house keeping!

Wasn't it Stoltze speed racing or something of the like?

EDIT: I searched, yep; Stoltze speed racing it is. I loved that car!!

Been racing for 11 years now. Currently doing AutoX duties and getting suspension and handling sorted out. Will be moving to COM later this year (hopefully) and more track events.
