Progress on the '74

WildWilly

True Classic
We're making progress on the 74, the 78 has been sold and the focus is now on getting the 74 back on the road. While the motor was out, we cleaned up the engine bay and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Here are some pics.

Nice work..

Kinda wish I had pulled the motor on my 86 just to freshen up motor bay paint, but it has no rust and still looks pretty clean so I am hoping to just give it a good cleaning and light touch up where I can when I get it back from paint.

Down the road if I ever have to pull the engine I will do it completely.

a few spots

Paul,

when we cleaned things up we found a few spots that were rusted through, so we cleaned it up, cut out the bad metal and out in new metal However, what I found fascinating was a new product from 3M that is an epoxy that is stronger then welding once it sets. We used that to "glue" the new metal in place, then grinded/sanded it down and painted. I was really impressed with this stuff. Apparently, it is now being used extensively in the manufacture and repair of cars. For instance, I think all Toyota roofs are now "glued" on rather then welded. It seems like an amazing product. 2 spots in the engine bay and one in the wheel well. We didn't get into bondo to make it perfectly smooth, but you can hardly tell and I know where the spots are to look for. Can't wait to get the motor installed now and go for a spin!!

looks great Bill...would be very difficult to tell the car has had a colour change now.... the red looks great (that beige was awful!)

About the only thing that could make it look any better is that spanking new engine you have back in there!

Install

Steve, we're hoping the engine goes in this week. At the moment, waiting for the ceramic coated manifold to come back. We sent the exhaust and intake manifolds out to be machined. The intake was not completely flat, so they took off some material to make sure it was flat and then machined the exhaust manifold, so they are now a matched set and perfectly flat. We took them off when we took the motor out and could tell from the gasket that it wasn't sealing equally everywhere. I'll be driving soon and then to get to a dyno shop for a run. Can't wait.

As for the beige, you can still see some of it up front behind the rad, but when she's on the ground there is no way to know. I've got the new seats to go in and carpet. One of my jobs next winter will be to strip the interior, clean up all the metal and replace the floors, prime and paint and then install something like dynamat. Lots of fun to have yet. Yee Haw!!!!

Which 3m product did you get? their website has a wide variety.

Thanks and your engine bay looks awesome!

Ill find out....

My mechanic, did the body work and the paint, and I think he did a great job. More later when I know what exactly he used.

Not actually 3M....

But from NAPA. Here is a pic of the can. 907110 is their part number. This is the medium, sets in 2-3 hours, they make a fast which is 5 -10 min. No time to work with that one.

Engine is back in....

Engine is back in the car, waiting for the exhaust manifold to come back from being ceramic coated to make sure it never gets rusty, then we can put the intake/exhaust on and get ready to fire the beast.

Thanks for this, my path is now clear.
Inspirational.

Does anyone know of a way to get the soft porn off the image posting site? I've too many little eyes around me and I don't want to have to try explain that smut. I've got adblock but that doesn't do it.

Thanks....

Glad I was able to inspire you. But now you have to tell us, what is your path/plan?? Fill us in, we all love to read about each others exploits.

My hand has been forced. I can't ignore the condition of my car's body anymore, it is literally failing apart more every day. It is mostly cosmetic, the floors aren't bad but the body panels and windshield surround are terrible; both rear corners are gone, rear trunk access panel, lower 2" gone, corresponding edge it used to bolt to, gone, bottom of both doors gone, upper edge of one front fender gone, there's no place left to bolt exhaust hangers to. I've been vacillating between just buying a better car or doing something about this one, still vacillating. Mechanically and electrically it's pretty solid, I've been through most systems repeatedly. I love the thing and have put about 55,000 miles on it in the 6 years I've had it.
It needs a total tear down, all the bad spots addressed and then a presentable paint job. I'm pretty sure I could do it myself given the panel adhesive option, I barely weld so that's out. I've got the space. I can make the time. When I was done I'd have the car of my dreams so I think I should fire up and get going. It will kill me to off the road that long though.

Don't get too excited

If you have the cash buy the car in Florida for $4,500, there is NO WAY you can do all that repair and a paint job for $4,500. Unless you can do it all yourself, which I cannot. That is the main reason I sold the 78 and swapped my new motor into the 74. Someone else did a lot of work that I could benefit from. Just my 2 cents:) Cheers...

Use Photobucket. The one with the tiny thumbnails & porn is very annoying.

getting closer...

fired the engine today, she came right to life. A few more things to do and then we go for our first drive. Maybe home this weekend.

Fire breathing dragon!!!

Well the engine is back in, the exhaust manifold is back from being ceramic coated, the intake manifold has been painted, the carbs installed and we fired her up yesterday. Had to replace the clutch master cylinder when we went to bleed the clutch, there was no way the old one was going to work. The steering column had to come out for that. When we were in there, noticed a leak from the brake master cylinder, so disconnected the lines, re-flared the ends and put her back together. Now to bleed the brakes, get the exhaust installed, set the timing and go for a spin. Hopefully, in another day or two. Here is a link to the blog where there is a short video of firing her up for the first time in the new car.

Almost home...

Went for a 40 mile ride last night and all was well. Doing the MOT stuff this morning and then hoping to bring her home today. Pics to follow later today.

WooHoo.

A few more miles for more enjoyment and a good shakedown, and it must be time for a Dyno to see what sort of power she's making?
