speed bleeders
Has anyone used the "Speedbleeder"s for their clutch system.
https://www.speedbleeder.com/ I looked under the Fiat listing at this website, and found that only brake applications were listed. Item # SB8125L I am presently learning how to bleed my clutch system and looked thru the archives for as much info as possible. I found a reference to this item but it was for a Fiat 124 (I think.) Seems to me that if these fit the X1/9 slave cylinder at $7.00 per ($15.00 for the stainless steel) we would all have them, since clutch bleeding would become a quickie job with no effort at all and even someone as inexperienced as I could do it. |

I use them on my MG's clutch slave. Help a lot yes but not a magic bullet. Certainly worth the $$. I put them on my Midget as I work on brake components.

In the 12 years or so...
... I've not heard of anyone using them on a clutch slave, only brake systems.
YOU COULD BE THE FIRST and then let us know how it went. Personally, I've never seen the need for them in either application. But I do believe when it comes to bleeding anything on any FIAT it is a LEARNED art-form... or VOODOO... and unlike any other auto! HA! Welcome to the darkside... let us know what you decide and how it works. I still believe that you will find the Banjo Bolt tends to trap air in its recesses and its best to bleed it first anyway.

been there done that
I used a speed bleeder on Chris' X1/9 slave master. Worked great. pressing the clutch pedal bled the cylinder with no air getting back in the system.

I use the speed bleeder on my clutch slave cylinder.
Same bleeder as brakes. Definitely a big help. I can't believe that it is not more widely used.

Me too
Installed one on the clutch for one of my cars. Works just fine.
If you've completely draining the system (say, because you're replacing the master too) the speedbleeder isn't a substitute for getting the air out of the high spot where the hard line meets the flex line in the engine compartment. Tony suggests bleeding at the banjo bolt to deal with that - I've always found it easier to unbolt the slave from its bracket, lift it so that the bleeder is the highest point, and let the pressure bleeder take it from there. |

There's one on mine.
It's the same size as the one for the brakes so you can try it on both. Crack it open and just keep pumping, no need for that helper. The thing to watch is not to let the pot go empty. There was a tread on this before , maybe 2 years ago?? I found it great to work with. If there is a problem then the other suggestions will help also. On my last slave install I parked my X in the fall and it barely made it into my garage as the slave fluid had leaked out, and the pot was empty. Next spring I replaced the slave, filled the pot and raised it up by the windshield to let any air go up to the pot ( in the first hoze) The next day I put the pot in place and proceded to bleed with the Speed bleeder. It went perfectly even though the system had run out, and sat for 6 months. I wouldn't do without one now

I'm feeling like I've lived in a bubble....
Not to get off topic but I've never heard of speed bleeders before. I thought buying a one person bleeding system was the best you could get for bleeding your brakes but this seems to be the bomb. I checked the speed bleeder website but what part# is for the X1/9?
I definetely want a set for my X pronto and if it does work for the clutch then I'll get one for that too. 'PeteX1/9 |

I found the source....
It feels wierd to respond to my own thread but I went searching and found the part# and already ordered a set of four for my brakes. I still can't believe I've never heard of this before. It's amazing how sometimes the simplest things are the most amazing.

You can get them off the shelf at most auto stores. That's where I've gotten mine. They seem to stock the most common ones. I think I paid $10 for a two pack. Speed Bleeder I believe a brand name but there are decent generics for less. If you know the speed bleeder number you can decode it. On my MG it was SB3424, 34 is 3/4" and 24 is pitch not sure on the fiat though, take the old bleeder along with you to the store.

part number
Pete -- I went to the website www.speedbleeder.com and looked under Fiat. The only one listed is for brakes item # SB8125L
The reason I posted the inquiry was to see if anyone had used these for the clutch slave. Evidently they have and seem to work well. I'm going to get at least one. Steve |
