MultiAir

There is a good write up of the new Fiat MultiAir engine (which is now available for the Alfa MiTo) in the latest Auto Italia. For those without a subscription, there is a good description of how the system works here: http://www.gizmag.com/fiat-releases...h-in-internal-combustion-engine-design/11184/ It seems to be taken from a Fiat press release. In any case, this should provide food for thought for anyone toying with the idea of a "non Italian" engine swap in their X. Fiat really are at the forefront of engine design. A 1.4 MultiAir turbo would be a nice choice for an X. I'll just have to wait until someone crashes their new MiTo ;-) Cheers, Dom.

Wow...

It looks like trying to retrofit something like this will require us to come up to speed on quite a bit of technology.

i remember a year or two ago Fiat talking about their turbocharged two cylinder motor with some really high HP rating. looks like we are about to see it.

A lot to chew on... lots of innovation...

... and thought went into this idea!

This oughhta give both FIAT and Chrysler a leg up on the competition if they can market it successfully.

Thanks for sharing...

FIAT is doing what they can to make the best of petro powered engines.. this is a refinement of the current petro technology to it's best ability approach rather than dump a un-proven completely new technology on the public approach (the consumer computer/widget companies really likes to do this). IMO, FIAT is doing the right thing. The real question is how well will the motoring public accept this technology and what are the real world problems with Multi-Air after many cars have been sold and many miles put on these cars by their owners...

Here is a FIAT conference about Multi-Air

and a video about Multi-Air:

During the years FIAT spent with GM, GM management would not give FIAT power train technologies a dime to spend on Multi-Air development. FPT licensed part of what they learned about Multi-Air to the Germans and others to try and keep Multi-Air development on life support... which appeared as variable valve timing in BMW's... It was not until Sergio became FIAT's CEO who gave Rinaldo Rinolfi the OK to complete development of the Multi-Air technology.

Check the "related articles" section at the bottom of the MultiAir article...

Toyota and Nissan (at least) are working on similar concepts.
